SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — About 150 members of Temple Sholom of Fanwood/Scotch Plains took part in “Mitzvah Day” May 18, giving back to the community in a variety of ways.

“It was a great turnout and all ages were represented, from babies to seniors,” said Jenny Winters, the Reform congregation’s director of education. “Participants were able to do such mitzvot as sing with the cantor at Ashbrook Nursing Center, planting flowers for the elderly and getting their car washed by the youth group to raise money for Children's Specialized Hospital. Everyone who participated seemed to find the day very fulfilling."

The congregation, made up of about 250 families, currently resides within the Fanwood Presbyterian Church and holds religious school classes at Union Catholic High School. But a building of its own is under construction.

“One of Temple Sholom’s main goals is to be a positive force in the community,” said Winters. “We are planning to host another Mitzvah Day at our brand-new building in Scotch Plains during the summer, where we will get families involved again with connecting to the community."
