SUMMIT, NJ - Terry Viney, an experienced executive coach and president of The Plus Factor, helped to take the fear out of public speaking on Friday morning when he addressed members of the Suburban Chamber of Commerce on that topic at its monthly First Friday networking event. More than 50 local business owners were on hand for the meeting.
Viney said that every business is looking for attention and getting that attention is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. He noted that competition for a business is everyone and everything since technology has led to a crowded arena where everyone is trying to get found and be heard.
To break through, a business must do something different and one thing a business owner can do to stand out from the crowd is to be an active public speaker. Viney said, however, that most business owners are terrified of public speaking.
The key to public speaking is to not be perfect but to be effective, Viney stated. Body language is actually the most important factor regarding effectiveness, he added.
To be an effective public speaker, here are the key items to address:
- What is my message?
- Why am I excited about it?
- What's in it for them (the audience)?
- What do you want them (the audience) to do?
