VERONA & LIVINGSTON, NJ – J. Daniel Adkinson, the Managing Director and Head-Commercial Real Estate for NewStar Financial, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees at The Children’s Institute (TCI) of Verona and Livingston.
Mr. Adkinson, who is head of his company’s real estate division and an adjunct professor at two universities, said he is looking forward to working with the TCI board to “help it find smart ways to finance its facilities” as the needs of TCI and its Center for Independence for adults ages 21 and up continue to grow.
The new board member said he is excited to have the opportunity to work with the board and administrators and staff at TCI because they are “a bunch of incredibly dedicated people whose work is hugely impactful and important.” Mr. Adkinson is a long-time friend of board member Jonah Zimiles, who approached him about joining the board because he thought his background could be helpful.
The Children’s Institute is a pioneer in the field of special education, serving preschool, elementary and middle school students at its Verona campus and high school and young adults at its Livingston campus, all of whom are on the autism spectrum. In addition, TCI serves adults ages 21 and up on the autism spectrum at its Center for Independence, located in Livingston.
Mr. Adkinson, a resident of Fairfield, Conn., said his background could also benefit TCI. “Certainly my background is in real estate and finance and I think those things will be important as the institute looks to expand,” he said. “I think it is critically important that we acknowledge the fact that the challenges do not end at age 18 or 21.”
As TCI looks to the future and many of its students age out of its school and young adult program, its’ board and administrators must look forward and work to address the need of the growing population of adults on the spectrum in New Jersey who need social, life and vocational skills in order to become active members of their communities, he said.
Mr. Adkinson, who has a relative on the autism spectrum, has more than 20 years of experience in the origination, underwriting, management and workout of portfolios of senior and subordinated real estate debt investments. For the past decade he has been a portfolio manager at JP Morgan Fleming Asset Management working in both the Fixed Income and Real Estate Investment Groups. Most recently, Mr. Adkinson was the Director of Debt Capital Markets for the Real Estate Investment Group responsible for building an investment business in high yield real estate debt and providing liability management for the group’s real estate funds and accounts totaling over $16 billion in net asset value. He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of ARCap Reit Inc., and a member of the Board of Managers of ARCap Investors, L.L.C., a leading investor in high yield commercial mortgage-backed securities.
Mr. Adkinson is a graduate of Williams College and is an adjunct professor at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University where he is the recipient of the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University where he is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award.
