Did you know the cross was illegal for the first 300 years of Christianity? It was illegal. If the Christians from the first 300 years showed up tonight and looked at your cross necklaces or your cross earrings they would be mortified. C. S. Lewis a really popular theologian who lived in Brittan, who wrote the Chronicles of Narnia, said the cross only became popular when everyone who had seen one used had died off. Jesus did not die on a cross so that we could have a beautiful piece of jewelry or a wonderful piece of architecture. He died on a cross so that mankind could be made right with God. What I have discovered in many churches all across America is there are crosses all over the building but the cross is never preached from the pulpit and I would rather preach the cross than show people pieces of architecture that make people feel good. Nobody was ever changed by a piece of architecture but we were all changed because Jesus went to the cross and was nailed to the cross for our sins. I want people offended by the cross and not the people wearing one. Let’s not be a church that makes architecture the object of worship, let’s be a church that makes Jesus the object of worship.
