SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The final touches are under way at the South Plainfield Community Pool with borough officials stating that the grand opening of the new, state-of-the-art facility will take place between Aug. 10 and Aug. 14. Due to construction delays resulting in a shortened season, the borough is also planning to keep the pool open beyond Labor Day.

"Our intent has always been to open the pool for the 2020 season and, at this point in time, we are about 10 days out, give or take," said Borough Administrator/CFO Glenn Cullen. "We want the pool to be open for at least a month and are working out the details to extend the season into September for our residents."

As of press time, final cement work is scheduled to be completed by Monday with site restoration taking place throughout the coming week. Filling of the pool with water from an underground well is slated to begin this weekend and, once chemical levels are balanced, lifeguard staff, who have been training at off-site locations, will come in to get familiarized with the new facility

All non-essential projects, such as decorative fencing and the installation of storage shed and a new registration house off the back parking lot, said Cullen, will take place in the off-season. As a result, when the facility opens, pool goers will continue to enter and exit through the pool house, which this past spring underwent a full renovation.

In addition to an exterior facelift, much of the building's interior was gutted with floor to ceiling renovations ranging from the removal of the drop ceilings; the installations of all new plumbing lines, a new water heater, and new electrical panels; new windows; and the reconfiguration of space.

The men’s and women’s washrooms have also been swapped and expanded and now feature such amenities as ADA-compliant showers and additional changing stations, stalls and urinals along with automatic no-touch toilets, sinks, and hand dryers. There are baby-changing stations in both restrooms and, while the manager’s office remains in its pre-existing location, the former first aid space is now a new family restroom accessible off the pool deck.

"Those who are familiar with the bathhouse will have to keep in mind that the men's and women's lavatories have been flip-flopped," reminded Cullen.

The South Plainfield Community Pool complex features a leisure and a wading (children's) pool, both with zero depth entry. There will be spray features, a climbable play structure, and an approachable water table-style play feature at the wading pool while the leisure pool will have a tall dumping and spray water feature, a whirlpool feature, in-water bench seating, and an in-pool shade area. In the competition pool/lap swimming area of the leisure pool, lanes have been relocated for wider and more regulated length and, in addition to the tube slide installed in 2015, the 7-foot section will feature a multipurpose activity zone with climbing wall and new flume slide.

"We believe the pool is going to open with most of the features in place," Cullen said, adding, "Once open, our South Plainfield Community Pool will be a summer haven that families can enjoy for decades to come. I will put this pool up against any other pool in the State of New Jersey."
