PARKLAND, FL- Parkland Mayor Rich Walker begins his new role as leader of the city this week, and he's getting right to work. After a long campaign, Wednesday's swearing in ceremony ushered in a brand new era for the City of Parkland and the Walker family.

"There is an exhilarating sense of excitement combined with an intense desire to get right to business," said Walker.  "Winning this election has arrived with a great responsibility to ensure that I am always available to all residents. I have been entrusted with a tremendous amount of responsibility which I do not take lightly. I intend to work diligently to ensure that I am available, knowledgeable of all issues and concerns and take all the residents into account prior to any decision-making."

The Walker family has been looking forward to getting back to normal after the sometimes intense, sometimes exhausting campaign season. Catherine Walker had been balancing life and schooling for their five children in addition to all the campaign commitments.

"Catherine and the kids have been very excited to get back to their normal lives (post campaign)," says Walker. "I am incredibly proud of my family for their dedication and commitment during this journey. The two weeks of early voting was an intense time within my household, with 12-hour days at the polls combined with E- Learning and a myriad of “normal” everyday commitments. We are grateful for the village that surrounds our family that ensured no stone was left unturned. We are in this together and Team Walker looks forward to the future!"

Rich Walker's campaign team helped set the tone for a positive campaign that connected with Parkland residents wanting to see their family-oriented community adjust for ongoing needs locally.

"The race was obviously much more intense this time around," added Walker. "One of the most incredible components of this race was the camaraderie and genuine commitment of so many residents that we have met along the way.  There is no way that I could have done it without the support."

As Walker transitions into his new role, there is much work to be done. Taking the helm of a growing city like Parkland in the midst of a global pandemic creates challenges that have never been faced before for local residents.

"I had my first Mayor's Call earlier this week, and we were updated on some pandemic items," shared Walker. "Numbers are on the rise, so we need to ensure that we continue to physically distance, wear a mask if you cannot physically distance and practice good hygiene. Small business is a priority that I want to continue to focus on. It is imperative that we work on ways to help them succeed during these times. I look forward to getting to work."

Ultimately, Rich Walker and the new team of City Commissioners are entering into an era of the unknown. A steady, positive hand and heart for the community are common traits among all five city leaders.

"It’s a unique and exciting time to have all 5 of us being sworn in at once," summarized Walker. "I look forward to serving the residents of our great City of Parkland. Thank you for this opportunity."
