MAPLEWOOD, NJ – Health Clinics, Affordable Care Act Assistance, author James Goodman at Words and an informal talk with the Township Committee at the Post Office highlight the week in Maplewood.

Monday, February 10:

10 a.m. – noon: Free Adult Health Clinic at Town Hall, 574 Valley Street, Maplewood.  Staffed by Maplewood Health Department Registered Nurse providing blood pressure and weight measurement, health and medication counseling, carotid bruits screening as needed, diabetes and metabolic risk assessments and referrals as needed. For an appointment, call the Health Department at 973-762-8120, ext. 4300. Walk-Ins welcome.

Tuesday, February 11:

7:30 - 8:30 p.m.: “America’s Music: Jazz in Newark” program at the South Orange Public Library, 65 Scotland Road, South Orange.  Former Star-Ledger editor Barbara J. Kukla will present a talk on her new book, America’s Music: Jazz in Newark ;A Comprehensive Jazz History of An American City. It is a sequel to Swing City: Newark Nightlife, 1925-50 and is the author’s fifth book about the people of New Jersey’s largest city. Kukla will trace Newark’s rich jazz history from the 1920s on, focusing on the lives and careers of jazz immortals Sarah Vaughan, James Moody, Wayne Shorter and Woody Shaw as well as the singers and musicians who made Newark a jazz epicenter through the years. Presented in conjunction with the Maplewood Public Library.

Noon – 5 p.m.: Affordable Care Act- Enrollment Assistance Services Available at Hilton Branch Library, 1688 Springfield Avenue.  Get FREE help choosing and enrolling in a Health Care Plan. A Certified Marketplace In-Person Assister from Cognosante, a health IT solutions and services provider, has partnered with the United Way, Enroll America, US Dept of Health & Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid and the Township of Maplewood- Library & Health Depts. . The Assister will be available to assist individuals, families, small business owners and their employees. DROP IN: NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED.

9 a.m. – noon: The Maplewood Township Committee will meet at the Maplewood Post Office, 160 Maplewood Avenue, for its "Talk to the Township Committee" program, which gives the public the opportunity to meet with the Township Committee informally to discuss ideas and concerns. This session is an Open Public Session, at which no action is taken.

 

Sunday, February 16:

2 p.m. - Author James Goodman will discuss his book, “But Where is the Lamb?” at Words Bookstore, 179 Maplewood Avenue.  A mere nineteen lines in the book of Genesis, God’s command to Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac rests at the heart of the history, literature, theology, and sacred rituals of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. For more than two millennia, people throughout the world have grappled with the troubling questions about sacrifice, authority, obedience, and faith to which the story gives rise.
