If your child is serious about basketball, they are in luck because Young World Ballers (YW Ballers), which until recently, has been the best-kept secret in the area, has a few slots left in its comprehensive, competitive and affordable, indoor, co-ed summer camp program for kids ages 5-17. The camp runs from July 8 – August 16, at the Community Center, which is located at 250 Main St., in West Orange. The camp runs weekly, from 9 am to 5 pm, Mon. to Fri., and offers FREE before care from 7-9 a.m., as well as daily lunch for $5. To register, call 862-754-8000, or go to ywballers.com.
Young World Ballers was created by Lammar Young to provide opportunities for youths of all economic backgrounds to train and develop as basketball players in a safe and educational environment. The players are nurtured and taught life lessons from a court view.
Young says that based on many years of experience as a head coach and director of various organizations and recreational clubs, he put a program together to help foster “the underdogs” – kids who have experienced most games from the bench, haven’t made travel teams, haven’t found organizations that would accept them for who they are, and those, who like him as a youth, have been unable to participate in sports due to financial hardship.
“I want these children to learn that they can do anything, if they put their minds to it, through hard work, dedication, determination, discipline, and education,” says Young, who also coaches basketball at Immaculate Conception High School, in Montclair as the head of JV.
YW Ballers are taught how to stand up for themselves both on and off the court, that respect is earned, not given, to be honest, and that it’s ok to make mistakes because that is how you learn and improve.
Through YW Ballers, players learn all aspects of the game from ball handling, passing, shooting, defense, speed and agility, fitness, and Game I.Q., to teamwork, camaraderie and so much more, while utilizing top-of-the-line training equipment, such as Vertimax, shooting guns, fit lights, and more.
The players work with certified coaches, who have at least five years of experience under their belts, in a 1 to 8 ratio.
