Thieves Help Themselves to Coins, Phone Charger from Cars in South Orange

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Police are investigating two thefts from separate vehicles.

A Centre Street resident reported that someone entered their 2006 Dodge and stole some change from the center console sometime during the overnight hours of April 22. The vehicle was parked in the victim’s driveway at the time of the theft, and there were no signs of forced entry.

Another resident told police that someone broke into their car and took their phone charger from the center console sometime between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on April 29. The suspect gained entry by damaging the driver’s side door of the 2007 Infiniti, which was parked in the NJ Transit lot adjacent to Church Street.

One person was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Danielle Mitchell, 27, of Brooklyn, was stopped when officers responded to a report of a possible crime involving a driver on Valley Street at about 1:30 a.m. on April 26. During the investigation, it was determined that Mitchell was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested without incident.

In other police news:

  • Three minors, two 15-year-olds from Maplewood and one 17-year-old South Orange resident, were arrested when police responded to a call of suspicious activity in the rear yard of a Waverly Place residence on April 27. Officers on the scene found all three in possession of an undisclosed controlled substance.

Holiday Events at Maplewood's Dickens Village

South Orange Celebrates the Season with 'Hometown Holiday' on Dec. 10

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - This Saturday, Dec. 10, is the return of the Hometown Holiday celebration in South Orange featuring Santa Claus, an Elf Parade, and the annual tree lighting. There will also be live music, merchant specials, and free two hour parking in South Orange.

Santa Claus will be at the South Orange firehouse for visits and pictures with kids from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Second Suspect Arrested in Killing of Cabdriver in Orange

ORANGE, NJ - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Orange Police Director Todd Warren have announced that authorities have arrested a second suspect in connection with the Nov. 30 killing of Jonas Larose in Orange. Larose, a cabdriver was fatally shot at approximately 11 p.m.

A sixteen year old juvenile was arrested on December 2, 2016 and charged with the murder of Larose.
