Time to Light It Up: Combined 'Friday Night Lights' and Hilltopper Weekend Just Days Away

September 23, 2013 at 10:25 AM

SUMMIT, NJ - Get ready for a double-dose of Summit spirit, as the traditional "Friday Night Lights" (FNL) football game and Hilltopper Weekend -- combined together this year -- are just days away.

The main event sees the 2-0 Summit High School (SHS) Varsity Football team -- fresh off a 48-23 victory over Johnson of Clark -- taking on Cranford.  Kickoff is 7 p.m. Friday under the lights at Investors Bank Field.  As is the tradition, a commemorative T-shirt -- which admits the wearer free to the game -- is now available for purchase. The black shirt, with "Light It Up" graphics on the front, costs $15 and will be sold outside the high school cafeteria Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday this week from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Prior to the game, beginning at 5 p.m., there will be a pre-game tailgate hosted by Towne Deli and the Summit Music Parents Association.
Other than the sports action, other activities include an iPhone giveaway at halftime of the football game, with only those adorned in the FNL shirt eligible to win, and a DJ will be spinning tracks adjacent to upper Memorial Field 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Friday Night Lights and Hilltopper weekend are organized by The Summit Booster Association, a parent run non-profit organization whose mission is to support Summit Public Schools Athletic Programs.  Sports are an integral part of students’ school experience, and the Boosters support all the athletic teams at Summit High School and Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.  Since the 1950s, the Boosters have been the primary source of outside funding for athletics, and last year contributed nearly $55,000 to support student athletes.
