Township Council Honors Sparta High School Football Championship Team

SPARTA, NJ- Sparta Township Mayor, Molly Whilesmith read a proclamation honoring the Sparta High School Football Team at the council meeting on Tuesday night.  The high school team won the North Jersey Group I, Division III State Championship game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.  They defeated River Dell with a score of 40-0, ending the season with an 11-1 record.

The 2013 Spartan varsity team was also recognized by the Star Ledger with their end of the season rankings.

Some of the state top rankings include;

  • Ranking 16th in the Overall Top 20 in the State (sixth of all Public School)
  • All-State Offensive First Team - Lucas Faria (one of only four juniors in a roster of 13)
  • Football Heroes: top single-game performances of the 2013 Season; Rushing- Faria with 44 carries, 541 Yards, 6 touchdowns in the game against Englewood
  • Final 2013 State Statistical Leaders; Top Rushing Leader-  Faria with 280 carries for 2174 yards and 33 touchdowns

  • Defense- 1st Team Kevin Foulds

Sparta Police: Third Sparta Man Charged with DWI in One Week

SPARTA, NJ- For the third time in less than a week Sparta Police have charged a Sparta resident with driving while intoxicated.  On November 27. Cpl. Marc Rubino stopped a 2015 Jeep, after seeing it being driven down the middle of the road, according to police.
