MANALAPAN, NJ - Two Spotwood residents, Jonathan Ramirez and Justin Rochford, were killed in a Saturday evening crash on Route 9. The accident was a single-vehicle crash along a stretch of Route 9 just south of Smallwood Lane according to published reports from the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. The accident occurred at around 9:30 yesterday evening. Preliminary investigations indicate the 2004 Infiniti G35 driven by Ramirez was traveling northbound when control of the vehicle was lost. According to prosecutors, the car left the roadway, striking a curb, utility pole and a guardrail. The vehicle was found in a wooden area about 100-yards from where it left the roadway.
Rochford was pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. Ramirez was transported to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Both Rochford and Ramirez were 2018 graduates of Spotswood High School.
The crash is still under investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Witnesses are asked to contact Monmouth County Detective Kristian DeVito at 800-533-7443 or Patrolman Matthew Porricelli and Detective Dominic Donatelli from the Manalapan Police Department at 732-446-4300.
Spotswood Mayor Jackie Palmer offered condolences to both the Rochford and Ramirez families in an online post Sunday afternoon.
"Today our little community mourns the deaths of two Spotswood boys," Palmer wrote. "On behalf of our entire boro, we offer our love, prayers, and deepest sympathies to the Rochford and Ramirez families. Our hearts are broken once again to lose such young members of our community so tragically."
