CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Shortly after two cars were broken into outside a Publix near Parkland last Saturday, Coral Springs police spotted the car suspected in the burglaries, a police report said.

Officers followed the rented Cadillac as it drove behind a nearby L.A. Fitness and then a nearby Walmart, possibly casing the areas for more cars to break into.

Finally, officers approached the car when it stopped at a Walgreens at 5480 University Drive.

According to the report, police arrested one of the suspects, Dashun Askew, 20, of Fort Lauderdale, inside the store as he attempted to check out with gift cards.

As police closed in, Askew tossed on a candy shelf a wallet containing a stolen driver’s license and credit card allegedly taken from one of the victims of the car-break at the Publix at 5950 Coral Ridge Drive on Sept. 5, the report said.

Back at the car, police took into custody the driver, Cody Florence, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, who did not have a driver’s license.

Officers found five credit cards allegedly belonging to the other victim of the car-break at the Publix, the report said.

Police also found a burglary tool used to shatter windows as well as a bag of marijuana.

As police investigated further, they also found in the car a bank cash bag containing checks and a $300 Samsung Tablet stolen from a car break-in earlier that day in Davie, the report said.

Askew was charged with two counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, cannabis possession, and obstructing officer without violence, the report said.

Florence was charged with two counts of burglary/theft from auto, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, not having a driver’s license, and window-tint violations.
