Two Men Shot in 4th Ward Tuesday Night Fleeing Altercation

PATERSON, NJ - Two 19-year-old men were shot in the leg Tuesday night as they were fleeing an in-progress altercation in the area of 134 Godwin St. in the city's 4th Ward.

Lt. Patrick Murray told TheAlternativePress.com that at around 7:20 p.m., patrol units were dispatched to that area on reports of a shooting. They found one 19-year-old male, a city resident, with a gunshot wound to his lower right leg. He was transported to St. Joseph' Medical Center for treatment.

Shortly after that, a second victim arrived at the same hospital with a gunshot wound near his left knee. Both victims were with a group of people on Godwin Avenue when a physical altercation between two other males broke out in the street.

"During the fight, a third male produced a handgun and the victims said they saw him start firing the gun in the air," Murray said.

As the two victims started to run away from the scene, the gunman shot each of them from behind in the leg.

Both victims were in stable condition as of Wednesday morning.

Although this was just the latest in a series of shootings in the city over the last 10 days, this one does not appear to police to be connected to the other recent incidents.

"This looks to be unrelated to any of those other incidents," Murray said.
