CRANFORD - Union County College Women’s Basketball player Yamel Abreu of Elizabeth, participated in the 11thAnnual National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Star Showcase from July 27-29. Held at Georgia State University, Yamel was one of 40 student-athletes from across the nation who were chosen for the showcase.
Throughout the weekend, the student-athletes improved their skills and honed their craft during team practices. The talented athletes demonstrated their abilities for coaches from four-year schools nationwide who represented the top NCAA and NAIA programs.
Yamel was chosen as one of 40 student-athletes from throughout the nation to participate in the showcase thanks to her hard work and commitment. During her freshman year, Yamel was a key constituent in leading the Lady Owls to the 2018 National Tournament. For the season, she averaged 23 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals per game which led her to be named to the 1stTeam All-Conference, 1stTeam All Region, and the National Tourney “All Tournament Team” selections.
“My time at the showcase was very positive. It was a new experience, and I enjoyed meeting the other players,” Yamel stated. “It was particularly exciting because I want to play at the next level and to see the coaches there, it was like I was closer to my goal.”
Yamel, who is majoring in education, is now preparing for the upcoming season. Based on her first year, expectations are high for her sophomore year. “Yamel is one of the most driven student-athletes I have ever met,” Coach Marbely Montas added, “She started her first year at Union focused and determined to be the best player in our Region and that’s exactly what she did. She is a leader on and off the court and proved that during the All-Star Showcase in front of all the coaches who were able to attend. I am very optimistic about this upcoming season, and we are all excited to have Yamel back for her second year!”
