CRANFORD – The Office of Continuing Education at Union County College is offering Uniform Construction Code courses this semester for individuals interested in construction and licensure. These programs have been approved by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
Building Inspector I.C.S. is a 75-hour hybrid program which provides students with the educational information on building code requirements for medium-sized industrial and commercial structures. It will cover building construction, foundation design, wood and steel frame construction, fire resistance rating, requirements for building sub code, testing materials and uniform construction code. The in-person sessions will be held on Sat., Jan. 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and Tues., April 23 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Cranford Campus. Online sessions will be held through the Canvas learning platform on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, Jan. 29 through April 18 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The cost of the program is $785, and students will need to complete the Building Inspector R.C.S. course prior to enrolling in the I.C.S. course.
Electrical Inspector H.H.S. course is 45 hours in length and covers: system design, electrical service design and sizing, branch circuit and feeder design, appliance and motor circuits, plan review and field inspection, systematic plans analysis, material requirements, installation methods, basic inspection, report writing, violation notices, inspection and recordkeeping, Uniform Construction Code organization and content and electrical subcode issues. The course will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from March 19 through May 7 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The cost of the program is $525.
Fire Inspector H.H.S. is a 60-hour hybrid program designed to prepare students wishing to obtain licensure in the Fire Protection discipline of the NJ UCC, after they have completed the Fire Protection I.C.S. program. Course work includes the building use groups, types of construction, height and area, fire protection systems and means of egress. Students will learn when the building codes require such systems and equipment in new renovated structures along with the standards for systems installations and acceptance testing, course textbook information is provided the first day of class. The in-person sessions will be held on Sat., Feb. 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm and Mon., April 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on the Cranford Campus. Online sessions will be held through the Canvas learning platform on Monday and Wednesday, Feb. 11 through April 17 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The cost of the Fire Inspector H.H.S. program is $650.
