UNION, NJ – Union’s Chamber of Commerce hosted a reception on Tuesday for sponsors and supporters of the upcoming Mayor’s Day 5k event to be held on Sunday, Sept. 23.

“This is one of the best events in Union,” said event co-chair David Arminio, “because it’s a collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, the Township, the police, the Board of Ed and it’s all for the people of Union.”

A portion of this year’s Mayor’s 5K proceeds will go to help six-year old Union resident Sabur Clark, who has been diagnosed with Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcome (a form of childhood cancer).  According to Union Mayor Suzette Cavadas, Clark underwent chemotherapy and had surgery to remove tumors in his legs. “It was amazing to see all of the kids at Hannah Caldwell push him in his wheelchair, always including him in the group,” added Cavadas.

“Unfortunately, his cancer has returned,” said Cavadas, “and he’s going through chemotherapy again.  He’s an amazing little boy and he needs our support.”

Clark’s mother, Trisha Purefoy, said,”I want to thank the community for getting involved and standing behind our family.”

Shake a Paw Center for Rescue and Adoption is this year’s event sponsor.  “I’m proud to be able to work with the Township of Union Committee and to assist members of our community in the best way we can,” said Jeff Morton from Shake A Paw.  “I thank the Chamber and look forward to the event.”
