SPARTA, NJ-Sparta public schools will be operating on an early dismissal schedule on Tuesday. The reason for the unplanned early dismissal is over concern about the structure of the roof when a small buckle was identified in a classroom at the Helen Morgan Elementary school. It is suspected that the ice and snow on the roof may have caused the defect. The roof has not collapsed.
Superintendent of Schools Dennis Tobin, Linda Alvarez and Keith Gourlay are present in that building. As a precaution all of the schools are dismissing early and will remain closed until all of the district school's roofs can be inspected. Once that inspection has been complete and all of the roofs have been determined to be safe, the schools will reopen.
Tobin's office states additional information will be sent to parents. That will likely be this evening.
