BERNARDS TWP., NJ -- Police arrested a Newark man on Wednesday evening after he had allegedly broken into one home on Newell Drive, and was attempting to enter a second house on Mount Airy Road, according to a Jan. 17 township police release.

The release said that the suspect, Rubin Taylor, 62, had apparently gained access to the Newell Drive home through an unlocked door. Taylor was accused by police of allegedly taking several items, including cash, from within that house.

According to police, the man allegedly attempted to enter another home on Mount Airy Road several minutes later, but was confronted by the homeowner. Police said the man then fled on foot.

Police sources said the man was subsequently apprehended in the area at about 10:20 p.m. that night by a township officer who reportedly spotted him about two hours later. The suspect was charged and lodged in Somerset County Jail, according to the police report.

Police were assisted in the search by the Warren Township police and canines, and officers from Bernardsville and Peapack-Gladstone, Bernards police said.
