WEST ORANGE, NJ - Verona-Glen Ridge Ice Hockey defeated the Mountaineers, 7-2, on Monday at Codey Arena.

Prior to the game, West Orange Coach Eddie Scafidi said, “We have to match up against Dylan Decandia, who is one of the leading goal scorers in the state. It's going to take a solid effort from our freshman goalie, Mark Starbinski, to pull out a win. We have to figure out how to get Alec Hill and Jonathon Miller free to score some goals.”

The Mountaineers were able to provide those opportunities, but it was not enough to defeat VGR.

In the first period, VGR’s Dylan DeCandia scored a hat trick, bringing VGR a 4-point lead at the end of the period. Cam Gilmore and Kevin White assisted the first goal, Steven Timmons assisted on the second goal, and Sean Gluzberg assisted on the third. Alec Singer scored unassisted. Nick Distaso scored a power play goal with DeCandia and Stephen Wenzl.

West Orange’s Jonathan Miller scored the first goal for the Mountaineers. It was assisted by Alec Hill and Elijah Roberts.

VGR’s Stephen Wenzl scored the only goal in the second period with an assist from Daniel Wenzl.

In the third period, VGR scored their seventh goal by Owen Gleeson, assisted by Daniel Wenzl. West Orange’s Roberts scored the Mountaineer’s final goal, which was assisted by Hill.

First-year VGR coach Ken Lilien said, “The outcome was good. West Orange is a program that’s rebuilding. We are a little bit stronger than them, so I tried to work in some guys and work on some things. West Orange is up and coming, so it takes time to build a program. Their coach, Ed Scafidi, is a very good friend of mine, but I thought we played well.”

The Mountaineers will play their next game at Codey Arena against Millburn on Jan. 21 at 4:15 p.m.
