Village Apartments in South Orange Celebrates Older Americans Month in May with Weekly Special Events

Senior Living Community Shows the Power of Age

through Civic Engagement, Creative Arts, and Technology

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., May 7, 2013 – May is Older Americans Month and in its honor, The Village Apartments of the Jewish Federation in South Orange will host a month of activities and programs for residents and the public. To tie in with this year’s theme, “Unleash the Power of Age” the weekly programs will celebrate various aspects of senior life such as civic engagement, creative arts, and technology and innovation. There will be presentations by residents of the senior living community and free programs open to the public, as follow:

 

·         Thurs., May 9 Local seniors are invited to unleash the power of exercise and the benefits of movement at 9:15 a.m., with Village Apartments exercise instructor Tami Rager.  Later, at 4:00 p.m., resident Coty Blank presents “It Made a Difference.” She will share her experiences during World War II as a member of the British military intelligence agency, MI5, stationed at Bletchley Park, decoding and intercepting of messages transmitted by the Nazis.

·         Tues., May 14, 6:00 p.m.–Residents and visitors are encouraged to unleash their inner singers through the power of karaoke as they sing along to their favorite sound tracks.

·         Thurs., May 16 through Fri., May 31 Investors Bank, at 75 South Orange Avenue in South Orange, N.J., celebrates Older Americans Month with an exhibit that highlights key social services and enrichment programs seniors can incorporate into their lives. There will be information from Jewish Family Service of MetroWest and Jewish Vocational Services; and a display about the senior living communities of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation, with information about the different communities including the Kosher Nutrition lunch program at Village Apartments, and the Charles Bierman Home, a shared apartment living program.

·         Tues., May 21 at 2:30 p.m. – Resident Florence Dove, a trained artist and retired occupational therapist, will lead participants in a creative session of art therapy, and talk about the importance of the power of creative expression and finding creative outlets for seniors. Dove leads a weekly art therapy class at Village Apartments every Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

·         Wed., May 22 at 1:00 p.m. – A representative from St. Barnabas Medical Center’s Geriatric Health & Disease Management Center will present “What’s in the Bag?” a talk about important issues critical to living a healthy lifestyle for older adults. Nurse practitioners and other health providers from the Center offer monthly programs related to senior health at three senior communities of the Jewish Community Housing Corporation: Village Apartments, South Orange Federation B’nai B’rith House, and Jewish Federation Plaza in West Orange.

·         Wed., Mary 29th at 4:00 p.m. – Area seniors who like to knit or want to learn how are welcome to come unleash their power of creativity again with the Village Apartments Knitting Club, which meets weekly. Open to beginners and experienced knitters; attendees are asked to bring their own knitting supplies.

·         Thurs., May 30, 4:00 p.m. – Older adults will enjoy the power of technology with the community’s interactive computer system, It’s Never 2 Late. At this special program, attendees will learn how to use Skype, which allows users to talk to friends and relatives around the world through an internet connection.
