SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- A violent storm roared through Scotch Plains-Fanwood, downing trees and knocking out power shortly after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Over 100 homes were without power, and a large branch blocked the road at Crossway and North Ave.

Several residents reported that trees had damaged their homes.

"A lot of the houses that are out are on Poplar as a result of a Down Tree on Beech," said Mayor Colleen Mahr. "Public Service is aware. We also had some houses on Oakwood Court and a tree that pulled the power line down on North close to Terrill."

The storm left as quickly as it came and shortly after 7:00 p.m. the skies had begun clearing.

At this writing, a few streets remain closed: North Avenue near Terrill Road, Beech Street near LaGrande, Oakwood and Woodland, according to Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo.

"PSEG expects power to be restored by 6:00 a.m.," the chief added.
