GLEN RIDGE, NJ-- Players running on the field, scrimmaging, and the coaches encouraging them.
It's a welcomed sound and sight, and in this case, it's the Glen Ridge High girls' soccer team, which officially began practice on Sept. 14.
The Ridgers will open the regular season on Oct. 3, when the team hosts Newark Academy, in a 2 p.m. start at Carteret Park. Glen Ridge visits Livingston on Oct. 6, in a 7 p.m. start.
Glen Ridge is in the Super Essex Conference's American Division, and head coach Oscar Viteri, beginning his 20th season, is excited about the season.
"The kids are looking good in practice," said Viteri. "We're looking forward to playing. We're in the American Division, and know that each game will be a challenge, but we'll give it our best."
Glen Ridge has won eight straight state sectional championships, as well as two Group 1 crowns and a host of appearances in the Group 1 championship game, since 2012.
This season, there will most likely be a change in the sectional set up, keeping travel at a minimum.
"We'll see how it works out," said Viteri. "Right now, we're just focusing on the start of the season, on Oct. 2."
Viteri had yet to name team captains. He is very pleased with the leadership of the eight seniors on the roster. Those seniors are Talia Reid, Eliza Berner, Johanna Doherty, Sydney Mansfield, Ania Prussak, Olivia Carbonell, Josie Lang and Isabelle Deubner.
"They're great kids and hard workers," said Viteri of the upperclassmen.
The practices have been spirited and there's a good turnout of players out for the team.
"We got a good (team) scrimmage in, on Sept. 14," said Viteri. "It was good to see the kids starting to focus on the season."
Glen Ridge will play a scrimmage, on Sept. 24, at Carteret Park, against Verona, at 4 p.m.
Viteri's coaching staff includes new JV coach Anthony Sicoli, along with returning coach Lindsey Deptula and volunteer goalie coach Phil Funcia.
