Voters Will Decide on Two Parts of $65.7 Million School Budget for 2014-15

CHATHAM, NJ - The school budget for the District of the Chathams will go up by either 2.52 percent or 3.34 percent, depending on what voters decide on April 23.

The District of the Chathams proposed its $65,637,886 budget for the 2014/2015 school year at the Board of Education meeting held Monday night.

The district tax levy would increase by $1,408,373, a rise of 2.52 percent over last year. The amount to be raised by taxes is $57,282, 607.

But it would become a 3.34 percent increase in taxes if the second part of the budget proposal is approved by voters on April 23. The board is proposing a permanent increase per year of $460,000 to "Enhance and Augment the District Technology Education Program." It would increase the tax levy by .82 percent.

Chatham will receive an increase in state aid of $81,200.

The budget includes school improvements from the capital reserve fund, which will include: Tile replacement at Chatham Middle School, auditorium window upgrade at CMS, toilet room upgrade at CMS, toilet room upgrade at Washington Avenue School, and Turf replacement at Cougar and Haas fields.

In other business, the board approved Parent Teacher Organization after school education enrichment classes. Approved for Milton Avenue School were: Golf, Creative Tile Art, Technology (Digital Photography & Technology), Eco Club, Lego Creative Challenge, Cooking, Mad Science Forces, Structures and More, Fashion Design, Lego Robotics, Dodgeball, Reader's Theater, Painting and Drawing, Art/Music Workshop, Meet the Author, Scooters.
