Walk To School Day at Pleasantdale Elementary

October 3, 2012 at 11:00 PM

Pleasantdale Elementary School in West Orange joined schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3, 2012.

Approximately 150 students from Pleasantdale participated by walking to school and around the school gym on Wednesday along with parents, teachers, PTA members, and school administration.
The event began at 8:15 with kids, parents, and school staff walking from different locations. Some Walkers came from their homes while others who live too far away to walk, drove to meet up locations at Sunnyside Road and at Greenwood Avenue. Bussed students also participated by walking around the school and gym. Other special activities associated with the walk included a special Pep Rally in the gym led by school principal Dr. Pollara, school counselor Mrs. Chirichiello, and Pleasantdale dad Mike Dannemiller. The Pleasantdale PTA gave away waters, snacks, and prizes to participants.

In 2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.

The Pleasantdale PTA, Health and Wellness Committee organized the event. This PTA committee has also organized a weekly Walk and Talk Club and is currently putting together a walking school bus for families within walking distance of the school.

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.

Waze.

Ever since bridge repair closed a major thoroughfare near my house, the traffic on my sleepy street has increased dramatically.  And it is not by accident that commuters have figured out ...
