Walmart State Giving Program Awards SAGE Eldercare $35K

December 5, 2013 at 1:07 PM

SUMMIT, NJ – Walmart recently awarded SAGE Eldercare with a $35K grant, which will assist with SAGE’s Meals On Wheels, Grocery Shopping and Errand Service, Small Home Repair, and Portable Pantry programs.  The grant was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program which strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities throughout New Jersey.

“In today’s economy, a growing senior population is experiencing financial hardship that threatens their access to nutritional health.  SAGE’s Meals On Wheels program finds those seniors who are hit the hardest and protects them from hunger, isolation and crisis,” noted Jessica Rosenzweig Gruber, Executive Director for SAGE.  “This grant strengthens SAGE’s efforts to hand-deliver food to older adults living in communities in Union, Essex, and Morris Counties.”

SAGE’s Meals On Wheels program began in 1966 and is expected to deliver 48,000 meals to approximately 250 older adults in three counties for 2013.  In addition, the Grocery Shopping service serves 55 home-bound seniors and the Portable Pantry provides more than 1,200 packages of free non-perishable and balanced nutrition items to the area’s most vulnerable seniors.  In 2013, the Home Repair Service will have served nearly 100 clients by removing physical hazards, installing accessibility modifications, and completing necessary chores to promote safety within the homes.

“Walmart is committed to supporting those who make a positive impact on the lives of New Jersey residents," said Philip Serghini, Director of Public Affairs for Walmart. “Through this grant, we are hopeful that more older adults in New Jersey will benefit from all of SAGE Eldercare’s programs.”

SAGE Eldercare is a unique community resource that offers a comprehensive array of programs and services for older adults and caregivers, promoting independence and quality of life.  Founded in 1954, SAGE is one of the few non-profit eldercare agencies in the United States, and the oldest in New Jersey, that offers innovative services and programs to meet the changing needs of families and older adults so they can age in their own homes.

For more information about Meals On Wheels, please call 908-598-5554 or visit www.sageeldercare.org to learn about SAGE’s programs and services, which include: HomeCare; Meals On Wheels; Spend-A-Day Adult Day Health Center; GPS (Guidance, Planning and Support) Services; InfoCare free information and referral service; Fall Prevention Initiative; Home Repair Service; Grocery Shopping and Errand Service; Bill Paying Service; Holistic Living Services; Alzheimer’s and PREP caregiver support groups; Community Education; and Union County Medicare SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program).

In addition, SAGE has operated a Furniture Restoration Workshop, run by volunteers who specialize in caning and rushing chairs and refinishing furniture, and a Resale Shop for more than 50 years.  Both provide essential funding that supports the organization’s programs and services for older adults in the community.

SAGE Eldercare serves 7,000 people throughout Union, Essex, Morris and Somerset Counties, as well as across the United States.
