SUMMIT, NJ – Walmart recently awarded SAGE Eldercare with a $35K grant, which will assist with SAGE’s Meals On Wheels, Grocery Shopping and Errand Service, Small Home Repair, and Portable Pantry programs. The grant was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program which strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities throughout New Jersey.
“In today’s economy, a growing senior population is experiencing financial hardship that threatens their access to nutritional health. SAGE’s Meals On Wheels program finds those seniors who are hit the hardest and protects them from hunger, isolation and crisis,” noted Jessica Rosenzweig Gruber, Executive Director for SAGE. “This grant strengthens SAGE’s efforts to hand-deliver food to older adults living in communities in Union, Essex, and Morris Counties.”
SAGE’s Meals On Wheels program began in 1966 and is expected to deliver 48,000 meals to approximately 250 older adults in three counties for 2013. In addition, the Grocery Shopping service serves 55 home-bound seniors and the Portable Pantry provides more than 1,200 packages of free non-perishable and balanced nutrition items to the area’s most vulnerable seniors. In 2013, the Home Repair Service will have served nearly 100 clients by removing physical hazards, installing accessibility modifications, and completing necessary chores to promote safety within the homes.
“Walmart is committed to supporting those who make a positive impact on the lives of New Jersey residents," said Philip Serghini, Director of Public Affairs for Walmart. “Through this grant, we are hopeful that more older adults in New Jersey will benefit from all of SAGE Eldercare’s programs.”
