WARREN, NJ - On Sunday, July 20, Warren's April Lockhart advanced after the duel round on ABC's "Rising Star" with a dramatic win over Sonnet Simmons.
“Rising Star” revolves around real-time live voting by viewers to determine which singers advance through the various rounds. According to the “Rising Star” rulebook, contestants have to have a thumbs-up from 70 percent of those voting to advance to the next round and "Raise the Wall." All performances are live and when voters hit their app with yes or no, the result hits the broadcast screen within one and a half seconds.
Simmons started things off with "Feeling Good" and walked away with 73 percent.
Lockhart took the stage next with her soulful vocals on Neon Trees' "Animal." Lockhart passed Simmons, getting 76 percent of the vote.
From Rising Star:
The three performers who made it through on Rising Star on July 20 were Macey Kate, April Lockhart and Austin French. The remaining eight performers will compete in next week’s Duel Rounds.
A freshman at Fashion Institute of Technology this fall, Lockhart usually lives in Nashville TN and is from Warren, NJ. She has amniotic band syndrome which left her with no left hand. She plays guitar and ukulele with a small prosthetic to hold her pic which she calls her “birdie.” She hopes to inspire people through music to be unique.
Lockhart may face Simmons again.
Lockhart tweeted,"WEST COAST ITS TIME!! Save my amazing lovely duel partner @Sonnetmusic #SaveSonnet 💜"
And the west coast listened.
Simmons was the performer who got the highest percentage of votes from the west coast and who did not win their duel so she is saved and will move on to the next round.
