Washington Avenue Spelling Bee Fundraiser Created a Buzz

CHATHAM, NJ -The Chatham Education Foundation sponsored Washington Avenue School’s Spelling Bee Fundraiser - which put a clever twist on the classic spelling bee we all know.

Along with individual entry donations of $25 per speller, the fundraiser generated a welcome source of funding - yet more importantly a great community night to remember.  The proceeds from this event will benefit Washington Avenue School educational initiatives.

Friday evening, Chatham Middle School Auditorium was buzzing with 200 Washington Avenue School student spellers.  Students in grades 1-3 formed hives of 3-4 spellers.
Each hive cleverly named their hive (i.e. Stellar Spellers, Gud Spelers, Stingers etc.).  The spellers sat in clusters of seats with their hives on the stage.  Each hive had notepads for each speller and one whiteboard with which to write their team submission of the “word."  Two teachers per grade (First Grade-Ms. Cuffe, Mrs. Repsha; Second Grade-Mrs. Gomber, Mrs. Turrisi; Third Grade-Mrs. Busanic, Mrs. Gangaware) volunteered to be Beekeepers (Judges).
Ms. Quigley, Washington Avenue School’s Principal, was the Master of Ceremonies.  Each grade had about an hour on stage.  The Beekeepers would announce a word and then the hives would conference and decide the correct spelling of the word within 35 seconds and one of the spellers in the hive would hold up a white board with the given word.  Rounds kept going until the top hives remained.

The hive winners from each grade are as follows:
First Prize:  The School Buzz (Maeve Bogue, Emily Borowicz, Dhiren Holland, Carly McNamara)
Second Prize: Honey Seekers (Dan Cvetkovic, Anna Farrugia, Dylan Sheehan)
First Prize: Buzzer Beaters (Alex Coutras, Will Farkas, Nicholas Smith)
Second Prize: Jackson Hive (Laurel Hamilton, Annika Miocevich, Jessica Poillucci)
First Prize: Disco Minions (Genevieve Drouet, Violette Entman, Bettina Mogelvang)
Second Prize: The Wannabees (Julie Herbert, Kayla Lok, Lucia Wang)
Third Prize: E3(Erin Bolger, Ellie Herr, Ella Tully)
