Watchung Hills Defeats SPF 12U Grey Baseball Team in Championship Game

WARREN, NJ - In a title contest decided in the sixth inning, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood 12U Grey baseball team fell to Watchung Hills, 6-5, on Friday, July 26 in the Group B championship game of the New Providence Green League.

Colin O’Brien drove in three runs on two hits for SPF 12U Grey. He singled in the third inning and tripled in the fifth inning.  His hit in the fifth tied the game at five and capped an impressive comeback for SPF.      

Watchung Hills was sparked by Gio Colatruglio and Anthony Yarussi, who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs.

The bottom of the first saw Watchung Hills take an early lead, 5-0. Watchung Hills got things going when James Falivene singled. A single by Nick Ciraulo then moved Falivene from first to second. Colatruglio singled, bringing home Falivene and Ciraulo. Watchung Hills added more runs when Colatruglio scored on an RBI single by Tanner Hogan and Derek Mobus scored on a walk by Yarussi.

After posting two runs in the second, SPF Grey again scored two in the third. In the second, SPF scored on an RBI single by Jude Musano driving in Ben Fleischer, who led off the inning with his first of two hits.  Tyler Erath then reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Joe Meade, who also had two hits in the game.  In the third inning, Steven Verrastro and Jack Quinones started the frame with consecutive base hits and later scored on a single by O’Brien.

Watchung Hills won the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one run on a bases-loaded walk.
