WARREN, NJ - The Lady Warriors' season continues.
On Tuesday, May 27, the Watchung Hills Lady Warriors topped Westfield , 7-4, in the semi-final round of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 Tournament and will play North Hunterdon in the final on Friday, May 30.
Westfield took the early lead.
After three innings,and five strike-outs, Watchung Hills faced a 2-0 deficit. The Warriors settled down,found their groove and scored seven runs on eight hits to get the victory.
After tying the score in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Meghan Kovac and a squeeze bunt by McKayla Brady, pitcher Alyssa Murray knocked out a three-run homer to center to take a 5-2 lead.
Westfield battled back and made it a 5-4 game in the fifth on a double steal and an RBI single by Chrissy Ferraro.
Westfield put a runner on second with one out in the sixth. Sam Velez singled and a throwing error allowed her to get to second. But the runner got stranded.Third baseman Annie Suitovsky and shortstop Meghan Kovac each made strong throws to first to strand the runner.
Watchung Hills extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth with RBI singles by Suitovsky and Kayla Schinik to make the score 7-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Westfield rallied by getting runners on first and second with one out.
But Murray kept her composure and struck out the next batter on a 3-2 pitch, then struck out the cleanup batter on three straight pitches. The last strike was a strike call on a change-up that ended the game.
In a re-match of last year, Watchung Hills will face top-seeded North Hunterdon in the section final on Friday. Watchung Hills won its first sectional title since 1995 when it beat North Hunterdon, 1-0, in the final last season.
