ANNANDALE, NJ - In a repeat of last season, Watchung Hills and North Hunterdon met in Annandale for the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 title on Friday, May 30.
Watchung Hills was victorious last year but this year, North Hunterdon overcame a two run deficit and with five runs between the second and third innings went ahead to top Watchung Hills, 5-2, in the NJSIAA/Blue Ribbon Awards North Jersey, Section 2, Group 4 championship.
Watchung Hills took a 2-0 lead in the first after Gina Priore walked, Meghan Kovac singled, Deanna Gonnella doubled and McKayla Brady also singled, all with one out, with Gonella and Brady each getting an RBI.
North Hunterdon pitcher Mason Spichiger struck out two straight batters to end the inning.
Spichiger, a senior, eventually retired 17 straight batters, with eight strikeouts.
North Hunterdon woke up in the second inning when Kayla Parker homered over the left field fence to lead off the inning.
They added four runs in the third inning. Isabella Many led off with a single and after a sacrifice bunt and a fly out, Spichiger hit an RBI double thus tying the game.
Following a walk, senior Julia Arthur hit a three-run home run to give North Hunterdon a 5-2 lead.
North Hunterdon advances to the Group 4 semifinals where they will face Morris Knolls on Tuesday in Nutley at 4 p.m. It's North Hunterdon's first sectional championship since 2008.
