PARAMUS, NJ – Shoppers at Westfield Garden State Plaza who feel under the weather, need a prescription filled or are in need of a flu shot, now have a convenient place within the mall to have their health care needs met.

County and borough officials welcomed the arrival of The Valley Health System’s new Wellness and Walk-In Care Center to Westfield Garden State Plaza with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning.

“We are delighted to enhance our presence in our home borough of Paramus with the opening of Valley’s Wellness and Walk-In Center at the iconic Westfield Garden State Plaza,” said Audrey Meyers, president and CEO of Valley Health System.

Located near the Lord and Taylor Entrance 8 of the mall on level one, the new wellness center will serve as what Meyers dubs a “one-stop-shop for the health and wellness needs for all those who work here, shop here and live in the area.” Open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the center offers a range of preventive, urgent care and wellness services to the 19.2 million annual visitors that come to New Jersey’s largest mall, which include flu shots, first-aid for injuries and acute illnesses, over-the-counter pharmacy, urinalysis, blood glucose testing, occupational health services, Nebulizer, health and wellness programs, and prescriptions from Valley Health Pharmacy, which will be filled same-day by 6 p.m. if dropped off by 3 p.m.

A healthcare concierge will also be on-site to provide guidance and resources for patients in search of a medical specialist, scheduling a doctor’s appointment, arranging for a screening or enrolling in a class. Since the center’s opening this past Monday, November 18, it has held two full clinics for employees, who have seen about a dozen patients who were sick or in need of flu shots.

“It’s so exciting to see the partnership between Valley and Westfield,” said Assemblywoman Lisa Swain, D-38. “What I love about this model is that we are bringing health care to our residents. We are making it convenient, and it’s so important that we all have access to health care. The fact that it’s right here and they can drop off a prescription, go shop, and come back, what’s better than that?”

The new wellness center arrives just weeks after the groundbreaking ceremony of the $800 million new Valley Hospital on November 1. The state-of-the-art, 372-bed, 875,000-square-foot health care facility is slated to open its doors on Winters Avenue in four years.

“At the recent hospital groundbreaking, Mayor LaBarbiera spoke about Paramus now being both the center of the retail and now health care universe, and I couldn’t think of a better example of those two than being here with our new facility in this incredible shopping and dining destination,” said Meyers to a crowd of about four dozen people who were gathered outside the center this morning. “Our wellness and walk-in center is really just the latest in Valley’s long and valued partnership with Westfield Garden State Plaza. Over the past decade, we have held many health educational events here. We’ve sponsored speakers, we’ve led mall-walk programs, we’ve offered food and nutrition demonstration, and as the mall has grown and changed, we have continued to increase our presence.”

Jay Daly, general manager of Westfield Garden State Plaza, echoed those sentiments.

“We are very proud of the partnership. We look forward to a long and healthy relationship,” he said. “It’s such a quality organization and to partner with a leading community that offers great services is such an honor.”

Said Mayor Rich LaBarbiera, “Over the past couple of years, our relationship just continues to grow better and stronger, and we look forward to bigger and better things ahead with the hospital and all the other great things on the horizon. “I want to congratulate Valley on this very successful day and of course Westfield. We’re all part of this very great dynamic community and I couldn’t be more appreciative to be mayor of this great town.”
