West Caldwell GOP Team Kicks Off Campaign

June 10, 2014 at 2:26 PM

WEST CALDWELL, NJ - Republican candidates for mayor and council, Joseph Tempesta Jr., Michael Docteroff and Kathy Canale have officially launched their upcoming run for West Caldwell's open seats.

In an event held at Cucina Calandra on May 13, the three GOP candidates opened the political season with their 2014 Campaign Kickoff Event.

Tempesta, who is currently serving his fourth term as mayor of West Caldwell, said he is “re-energized and excited for the upcoming run.”

“We have accomplished an awful lot together but there is still much more to do,” Tempesta said. “I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and will continue to work hard to keep West Caldwell a great place to live work and raise a family.”

Councilman Tom O’Hern led the festivities, rallying the crowd of over 150 people to support the full Republican ticket in this year’s election.

"West Caldwell is a place my wife and I and our three children chose to live coming from Clifton five years ago,” Campaign Chairman Michael Crudele said. “…In doing our research we found that the community of West Caldwell is a great community to raise a family with a solid school system, good value for the home we purchased and fair taxes for the services we receive.”

Crudele will oversee the entire campaign, which, aside from candidates Tempesta, Docteroff and Canale, includes Treasurer Dora Hillyer, team member Bob Schott and Director of Operations Chris Smith.

Docteroff will be running for his first full three-year term. He has sat on the council for the last six months as a replacement member.

“My experience for the past six months has been both rewarding and challenging,” Docteroff said. “Being a member of the Planning and Technology Committee, as well as the Recreation and Parks Committee was a good fit for me personally as both my professional background in technology and my volunteer background in coaching and as President of the Caldwell Gridiron Club made for an easy transition to help our community. I look forward to more positive changes for the Township in the area of technology and I look forward to working with Mayor Joe Tempesta and Kathy Canale as well as the rest of the Council Team over the next three years.”

Canale, who is currently not on the town council but is employed by the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education, is looking forward to the challenge.

“I am running not for hope and change but rather to keep and maintain the small community character that West Caldwell is and remains the type of Town in which our family grew up,” Canale said. “I look forward to the challenges and pressures to maintain our small town character and look forward to serving the community I have lived in for almost my entire life.”

I would like to address some two of the major themes.

I was very sad to learn that after 146 years of big-top entertainment the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is folding its tent and leaving town.

This comes a year after the circus, due to mounting pressures from animal rights activists, got rid of the elephants.
