West Caldwell’s Diane Lockward Releases “The Crafty Poet: A Portable Workshop”

WEST CALDWELL, NJ - Diane Lockward, resident and Poet Laureate of West Caldwell, has released a book entitled “The Crafty Poet: A Portable Workshop." The Wind Publications book is a guide book meant to teach as well as to inspire poets.

The book is geared towards all poets, experienced as well as newcomers. The poetry tutorial includes ways to overcome writer’s block as well as examples of model poems and interviews with poets. The publishing house describes it as 'ideal' for an individual’s use or in a classroom setting. Lockward expressed that more than one hundred poets contributed to the book, including Poet Laureates from 13 different states.

On May 17, 2009Lockward was made Poet Laureate of West Caldwell. Annually, she organizes two poetry events at the West Caldwell Public Library:
  • Girl Talk: A Celebration of Women's History Month
  • Poetry Festival: A Celebration of Literary Journals
Poetry Collections
Lockward has authored three full-length poetry collections:
  • "Temptation by Water"
  • "What Feeds Us"
  • "Eve's Red Dress"
The West Caldwell author has also written two small chapbooks:
  • "Greatest Hits: 1997-2010"
  • "Eve Argues Against Perfection"

Lockward’s individual poems have appeared in professional anthologies, including “Garrison Keillor's Good Poems for Hard Times” and in journals including the Spoon River Poetry Review. She received the 2006 Quentin R. Howard Poetry Prize for her book “What Feeds Us” and Garrison Keillor, himself, has read her poems on NPR’s “The Writer’s Almanac.”

“One of the nicest compliments I've had on the book so far came from my publisher who said that he'd had a hard time doing the edits as he kept wanting to stop to write a poem.” Lockward expressed.
