Ellie Decker

Ellie is an extremely self-motivated and enthusiastic student who is actively involved in the Middle School community. She demonstrates leadership qualities both in the classroom and in other extra-curricular activities. All of her teachers agree that she is an excellent role model and an absolute pleasure to have in class. Ellie, a resident of North Caldwell, plays field hockey and lacrosse on the Middle School teams.

Tyler Behrle

Tyler not only has natural intellectual abilities, but also has wonderful peer collaboration skills. He consistently takes initiative to go above and beyond class expectations often in order to provide assistance to other students. He is an extremely conscientious student in all respects and is a delight to have in class. Tyler, a resident of North Caldwell, runs track for the West Essex and plays basketball for a club team. He also plays baritone for the Middle School Band and trumpet for the Middle School Jazz Band.

The 8th Grade Students of the Month are:

Lauren Lynch

Lauren has greatly improved her grades in nearly every class this school year. She has developed as a writer, and she cares deeply about those around her. She is kind, thoughtful, and is a pleasure to have in class. Lauren, a resident of Fairfield, is involved with the Middle School Yearbook and plays soccer for recreational and Middle School teams.

Ian Moore

Ian's inquisitive mind and willingness to constantly learn are just two of his strong academic assets. Ian works well in the classroom with his fellow students, and he can be counted on to be a leader in and out of the classroom. Ian, a resident of Roseland, plays baseball for the Middle School team. He also enjoys playing tennis and said that being selected as a WEMS Student of the Month is very exciting!

Every month, West Essex Middle School will select four students to be recognized and honored as the Students of the Month. Two students from each grade will be selected and the selection for each month will come from one academic team at each grade level. Cross-teamed students will not be neglected and will also be included in the selection process.

To be selected as a Student of the Month, the middle school staff has decided to base candidates and selections on a review of the “whole” student not just the student with the best grades. Character traits such as honesty, perseverance, responsibility, integrity and leadership as well as a student’s academic qualities will be included in selecting students to be honored.

Honored students will have their pictures displayed in the middle school display case outside of the main office and on the middle school website. Honorees are also recognized during the morning announcements and receive a certificate recognizing their accomplishment, a “Student of the Month” locker magnet and a $5.00 Student Store Gift Card.
