West Orange Fire Department Rescues PSEG Worker from 18-foot Manhole

WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Tuesday, May 6, at approximately 2 p.m., the West Orange Fire Department responded to a call at Essex Green Shopping Mall. A PSEG worker had fallen into an 18-foot manhole. The workers had removed a metal grate and the man accidentally stepped into the manhole behind it.

A crane that PSEG workers were using at the site was employed by the the West Orange Fire Depatment to lower firefighters down the manhole to rescue the employee.

As the firefighters rescued the individual, PSE&G monitoed the air quality in the confined space to make ensure that the victim and rescuers were not deprived of oxygen.

Paramedics responded to the scene and subsequently took the victim to University Hospital for treatment.  He sustained non-life threating injures and is expected to make a full recovery.
