WEST ORANGE, NJ - On March 26, 2013, Perth Amboy Fire Department Battalion Chief Timothy Simon sustained life-threatening injuries that required immediate lifesaving care at the St. Barnabas Burn Center in West Orange. While there, Simon was surrounded by patients, mostly children. The children ranged in age from infants through teens.
As Simon spent time with them, he realized how much toys, games, stuffed animals, and books, could cheer them up through an otherwise tedious and difficult recovery. Winter sees the most number of burn patients and the toys and games are in need of replacement as spring begins.
Last year, Simon and his family helped to deliver the collected toys and saw the smiles on the faces of the children at the Burn Center. Chief Simon has recovered and wants to give back by helping the children at the Burn Center.
The West Orange Fire Department, boasting a company of of firefighters who are also community activists, are excited to help collect the new toys, games, stuffed animals and books for the second annual St. Barnabas Burn Center Toy Drive in honor of Timothy Simon.
