WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange girls varsity soccer team showed their strength through their 1-0 defeat over Millburn on Wednesday at Lincoln Field for their third win of the season.
Senior striker Dana Catanzarite was the lone scorer for the Mountaineers and with great defense from the rest of the team, West Orange was able to shut out Millburn for the entirety of the game.
Late in the second half, sophomore left-back Kristina Jaeger fed Catanzarite the ball who launched a shot in the 29th minute for the only score of the game.
"We looked to posses the ball and choose our moments when to penetrate their passes and not force the ball forward." Coach Lou Mignone of the Mountaineers said, "It worked out for us, we created good goal-scoring opportunities through that possession play."
The game plan for West Orange was a success - there were great opportunities on both sides of the ball. Millburn had back to back corners late in the half but their girls were unable to answer the lone goal of the Mountaineers.
An overall intense game, both teams played very aggressively on the ball not giving any room to the opposing team which made it hard to open the scoring.
The fans in the bleachers were anxious to see whose team will score first, and West Orange's sideline was granted with the satisfaction of seeing the girls ultimately win the game in regulation.
Coach Mignone praised Catanzarite, Jaeger, and the rest of the team for their excellent play throughout the game.
West Orange girls varsity soccer is scheduled to play at Montclair Friday, September 27th at 4 p.m.
