WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Saturday, June 7, the West Orange High School Boys Basketball team will face off against Seton Hall Prep in "A Dream Big Event: The Avery Thompson Basketball Classic," to be held in the Tarnoff Gymnasium at WOHS beginning at 6:00 pm. The game will be played in honor of Avery Thompson, a West Orange High School student who lost his battle to leukemia in February.
A touching Remembrance Ceremony was held on May 22 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center. The event was filled with speeches, music, and videos to commemorate the fantastic life that Avery led. Thompson, who passed away at the age of 17, was a talented singer, rapper, songwriter, voice impressionist and film maker.
During the event, Stephanie and Joshua Thompson, Avery's parents, along with his little sister Jaden, announced that a charity would be established in Avery's honor called "The Avery Thompson Renaissance Child Initiative", which will aid talented youth in underprivileged schools, and and provide funds for leukemia research.
West Orange residents are encouraged to show their support this Saturday. Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children under age 12, with all proceeds going to the Thompson’s charity.
