West Orange Hydrant Flushing Scheduled for April 27-May 2

April 25, 2014 at 8:24 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange wants residents to know that New Jersey American Water Company will be flushing water hydrants in the township from Sunday, April 27 - Friday, May 2.

What is Hydrant Flushing? New Jersey American Water Company 'scrubs their pipes' each year in the 200 communities they serve. The flushing is a necessary and integral component of the system's maintenance, because clean pipes mean clean water.

NJ American Water opens fire hydrants to increase water flow, thereby 'flushing out' minerals and deposits in the pipes. Water service will not be interrupted, but residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure or a slight discoloration of their water when crews are flushing hydrants in their area. NJ American recommends that residents run their water until it runs clear again.

The link on the township's website provides further information from NJ American Water about the process, along with the following tips:

  • Avoid running your tap water and using the washing machine or dishwasher while crews are flushing in your area.
  • If discolored water occurs, simply run the cold water for a few minutes until it clear. This will allow the sediment to work its way through your pipes.
  • Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher. Wait until the water runs clear at the tap before doing laundry or running the dishwasher. NOTE: If your laundry becomes stained, DO NOT PUT YOUR LAUNDRY IN THE DRYER. Rewash clothes immediately using detergent and add a rust remover. Most rust removers can also be used on stained fixtures.
  • In some cases, slight discoloration might linger for a few hours. This discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not affect water quality. No health hazards are associated with discolored water from hydrant flushing.
  • If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.

Waze.

Ever since bridge repair closed a major thoroughfare near my house, the traffic on my sleepy street has increased dramatically.  And it is not by accident that commuters have figured out ...
