West Orange Landscaper Charged with Bilking 180K from 96-Year-Old Springfield Resident

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park today announced that Denis Marvin Solis, 54, a West Orange resident and landscaper, has been charged with second-degree theft and second-degree theft by deception. Bail was set at $75,000 by state Superior Court Judge Joseph P. Donohue.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, Solis, the principal owner of a landscaping company, stole sums of money from a 96-year-old woman in Springfield beginning in February 2010. Solis would convince the woman to write checks far exceeding the appropriate charges for work performed by his company.

Solis also allegedly accepted payments for work he never did. In addition, the prosecutors also allege that Solis convinced the elderly woman to write multiple checks on several occasions, generally in the $2,000 to $4,000 range, for a single job, telling her she had not paid for it.

An acquaintance of the elderly woman contacted police to express concerns of the alleged wrongdoing, and . Solis was arrested. His first court appearance is tentatively scheduled for Friday, April 4.
