West Orange Middle School Students Offered Opportunity to Apply for Write On Sports Program at Montclair State University

WEST ORANGE, NJ - Write on Sports is once again offering sixth and seventh grade middle school students in West Orange with Honor Roll potential the opportunity to apply for a slot in their Summer Writing Program, to be held July 8-19, at Montclair State University. The camp will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Founded in 2005 by D. Byron Yake, a former sports writer in Pittsburgh for the Associated Press and later sports editor and senior executive of the AP,  the project was created by Yake and his desire to assist students improve their writing skills via sportswriting initiatives.  His interest in journalism and education motivated Yake to establish a partnership with Montclair State University’s Broadcast Department, The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center and the Montclair School System to launch a summer camp program in 2006.

The Princeton Center for Leadership Training joined with Write on Sports  in 2007 in addition to the Education Department of Montclair State. WOS provided camps for Newark, Montclair and West Orange. The program was extremely successful, generating positive response from educators and students alike.

Also in 2007, an in-depth curriculum and teacher training program was developed by Dr. Erik Jacobson of Montclair State and an extensive evaluation program was introduced.  

Paterson held its first after school pilot program In 2008. In 2009, 2010, and 2011, MSU again hosted West Orange students and the Marion Bolton Center of the Newark Public schools hosted Newark students. After school programs were also held at Liberty Middle School in West Orange and Technology High School in Newark. In 2012, Hawthorne/Clifton  students were added.  More than 350 students have completed the program to date.  Several of those students went on to become involved in Journalism and Reporting at West Orange High School at West Orange High School.  One student wrote for the The Mountaineer, the High School's newspaper, and another was a reporter for TV 36/45.
