West Orange Recreation Department Excited To Offer New LaCrosse Programs And More

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Recreation Department is excited to announce new Lacrosse programs for Grades K-8.  

West Orange High School has hired a new varsity Lacrosse coach,  Rob McOmish.  McOmish has a long time background in the sport and a proven track record as a coach at neighboring Montclair High School.  Coach McOmish, known as Coach Rob to this athletes, is partnering with the Rec Department to build the sport of LaCrosse in the West Orange Community.  To that end, several of the programs that the township will be offering for youth LaCrosse will be sponsored by Big 5 Lax is a Soccer and LaCrosse company run by McOmish.  Utilizing Coach Rob and his expertise, will not only bring LaCrosse to the next level in West Orange, but retain affordability.

The West Orange High School Lacrosse Parent's Club invites all parents to its Meet the Coaches meeting on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:30 PM in the WOHS Library Media Center We hope that you make every effort to come; our head coach Rob McOmish will be present along with his assistants, Coach Mike Velez and Coach Dave Perez.   The coaches will share with parents about themselves as well as Coach McOmish's expectations for this coming high school season which commences on March 1, 2013.  At 6:30 PM,  Coach Rob will also lay out his energetic plan for the growth of youth Lacrosse in West Orange.  Bill Kehoe, Rec Director, I will also be on hand to discuss plans to the Travel Teams this spring in partnership with McOmish. 

Several Rec LaCrosse programs are currently open for registration: 

Indoor Winter Lacrosse Clinic

Big 5 Lax (Coach McOmish) is sponsoring an indoor winter lacrosse clinic on three consecutive Sunday afternoons  beginning February 10th.  It is open to grades K – 8.  Registration form is attached.  Since the 10th is this Sunday – register today!

WO Spring Lacrosse Program

Travel: On the Travel Side (Grades 6 – 8) we are hopeful that registrations will allow us to add a JV team this spring in addition to our regular varsity team.  Looking for interested 6th graders to form the JV team.  The varsity schedule has been expanded again.  This year’s team will be playing in two tournaments up from just one last year.  In addition the regular game schedule has increased by three games.  Registration form is attached.

In House: The Rec Dept will be running an In House soft Lacrosse league this spring.  It debuted in 2012 and was quite successful.  The teams practice during the week and play games every Sunday. 

Little Lax: Big 5 Lax will be taking over this program with the blessing of the Rec.  Forms should be available  soon.

In addition to the new LaCrosse programs, the Rec Department also has several other sports available for registration.  

Junior Spring Golf Clinic

In cooperation with the Rock Spring Club, the West Orange Recreation Department will offer the Junior Spring Golf Clinic.  This clinic is open to West Orange boys and girls in grades 3 through 8.  Instruction is provided by Rock Spring Teaching Pros and the registration fee is $75.00.  Sessions will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm.  The dates of the clinic will be April 17,24, May 1, 8,15, and 22.  Rain dates are May 29 and June 5.

Enrollment is limited.  Country club dress code is strictly enforced.  All participants must wear collard shirts. Tennis shoes are acceptable, no jeans, gym shorts or backwards hats will be permitted.

Girls Softball Registration

Registration is currently underway for the 2013 season of the Recreation Department's Girls Softball Program.  Practices start in early April with games beginning in May.  Volunteer coaches are needed.

There are three division of play:

Pee Wee Division, which is open to grades K& 1 which features T-Ball games.  The registration fee is $35.00.

Junior Division, which is open to grades 2& 3 which is a coach pitch division.  The registration fee is $35.00.

Senior Division, which is a player pitch division with umpires and is open to grades 4 through 6.  The registration fee is $50.00.

Games are held Monday through Thursday with the exact dates determined by field availability and number of teams.  

Please note registrations received after March 15th are not guaranteed admittance into the program and will be placed via available space.


Spring Travel Baseball Tryouts (This Sunday, February 10!)

Tryouts for the 2013 Spring Travel Baseball Teams will be held on Sunday, February 10th at the WOHS Pleasant Valley Way Gym.  Attendance at the tryout is mandatory.  Players who do not attend the tryout will not be eligible for the 2013 Spring Teams.  Past participation does not guarantee a roster spot on the 2013 team.

Tryout schedule is as follows:

3:00 pm - 2nd and 3rd Graders

4:30 pm - 6th through 8th Graders

6:00 pm - 4th and 5th Graders

These tryout slots are designed to organize attendance and are not representative of the teams that will be offered for the Spring season.  The teams representing West Orange in spring league play will be based upon the attendance at these tryouts.  Parental preference will not be considered in the placement of players on the team.  All player placement is done by the West Orange Recreation Department in conjunction with the West Orange Travel Baseball Committee in consultation with the Travel Baseball Coaching Staff.


Annual Rec Achievement Awards Luncheon

Join the West Orange Recreation Department as we honor individuals who have selflessly given of their time, efforts and talents to the recreation activities of the Township on Saturday, February 23, at  1:00 pm at the Katz Civic Center.

This year's honorees are Steve Quirk from the Mountain Top League, Gerry Huegel from the Recreation Department and Andrew Mazurek, Sr from the Police Athletic League.

A $20.00 donation is suggested, payable at the door, for the buffet luncheon.  The dress is casual and for more information, call 973-325-4150.  Attendees are asked to park in the tennis court parking lots.
