WEST ORANGE, NJ - Deborah Legow Schatz of West Orange was installed as President of NCJW/Essex at the organization’s annual Installation and Awards Evening on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at The Club at Orange Lawn in South Orange. Passing the gavel to her at her installation was her mother, Ellen Legow of Livingston, a past president of the organization.
Speaking to an audience of 200 NCJW/Essex members and guests, Ms. Schatz promised to “shake things up and do things a little differently,” to better position the organization for the future. As examples, she cited “harnessing the energy and brain power of our working or otherwise committed women,” and delving deeper into the digital world. “Search Engine Optimization could lead potential clients and volunteers to our doors for career counseling services, legal support, computer classes, self-improvement workshops and the whole panoply of programs we offer,” she emphasized.
Ms. Schatz has been involved with NCJW/Essex in numerous capacities for over 20 years. She will be one of the few NCJW/Essex Presidents to maintain a professional job while holding this office, hoping to set an example for younger professional women who might be interested in getting involved and establish a model of leadership for others to follow. In conclusion she commented, “Together, we do amazing good works every single day,” she said. “We bring to bear collegiality, ingenuity, commitment and financial support to offer programs that meet the needs of women and families in our own communities and throughout Essex County, all for the betterment of NCJW/Essex.”
