West Orange Rotary Presents Community Awards

WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Rotary held their 2014 Annual Awards luncheon at Mayfair Farms on Friday, June 20 and presented financial gifts to several noteworthy local organizations in fulfillment of their motto "service above self."

One by one, awardees thanked the Rotary for their ongoing generosity, noting, 'we don't know how they do it, but they go out and raise money to help us every year."

Several Rotarians presented the awards, including Michael Karu, Robbi Hershon, Joe Vena, Peter Horn,Tekeste Ghebremicael, and Megan Brill.

Recipients included Camp Merry Heart, the West Orange Scholarship Fund, the Mayor's Prgoram for Individual's with Special Needs, the West Orange African Heritage Organization, the Nikhil Badlani Foundation, Turtle Back Zoo, Friends of Edison, Main Street Counseling Center, Metro YMACA of the Oranges, the West Orange First Aid Squad, St. Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, West Orange Police Athletic League, West Orange Community House, West Orange Arts Council, West Orange Animal Welfare League, and the Washington School Rainbow Program.

Rotarian Dorie Cappiello and Karien Ziegler shared news about the Rotary's International Programs, including Rotaplast, a Rotary sanctioned international service project that provides reconstructive surgery for children with cleft palate and other facial deformities; Polio Plus, Gift of Life, Help the Children Hear, Pedals for Progress and The Rotary Foundation.

Ziegler shared that only 94 cases of polio had been recorded this year.

In addition to the awards, the West Orange Rotary is always front and center in the community, providing schoalrships for graduating seniors, distributing pumpkins at Halloween, and running several food drives a year for the Holy trinity-West Orange Food Pantry.

"The Rotary is one of the most generous organizations in our community," said food pantry volunteer Freddie Diemer. "Between the food drives and Shop Rite gift cards, they provide the pantry with thousands of dollars of food each year."
