West Orange School District Focuses on Health and Wellness with High School Recognition and K-8 Poster Contest

WEST ORANGE. MJ - Since September, the Health and Wellness Committee comprised of educators and parents in the West Orange School District, has been busily at work to raise awareness of health and wellness issues among the student population. A program has already been established at West Orange High School, and programs for K-8 have been recently launched.

The committee wanted to encourage healthy eating and exercise as important components of a healthy lifestyle. The Health and Wellness Spotlight program began at the high school in the fall. Kevin Alvine, Supervisor of Health and Physical Education, worked with the committee to discuss health issues and in Health classes asked students participate in an essay contest about the importance of health and wellness.

According to Health and Wellness Committee Coordinator Steve Melendez (also Assistant Principal at Liberty Middle School) each marking period, four students are selected and their photos displayed in the old Gym. In addition, they will be recognized later this year at a Board of Education meeting and will be guests at a healthy luncheon sponsored by Sodexo.

Michelle San-Horstman, a member of the Health and Wellness Committee, has been working with the Phys Ed teachers in grades K-8 to encourage students to take the Health and Wellness Challenge. Students may select from three different levels: Apprentice, Warrior, or Master (Master being the most difficult) and sign a pledge to complete the challenge. The challenge also requires that students track their daily progress on a chart provided to them. Upon completion the students return the pledge to their Phys Ed teacher.

Children will receive a Certificate of Completion and be recognized at an Awards assembly.

In addition to the certificates, a Poster Contest for students in K-8 has been announced. Click here for the flyer and rules.

Three winners will be selected by the committee and district art teachers and the first prize winner will win a $250 gift card; the second place winner will receive a $25 gift card; and the third place winner will receive a $15 gift card.
