WEST ORANGE, NJ - In an effort to make up for snow days in the West Orange School District, West Orange Public Schools will be open for a half-day on Feb. 17.
The district sent out the news on School Messenger earlier in the day:
"PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT IN AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE UP FOR ONE OF THE SNOW DAYS WE MISSED THIS YEAR, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WILL BE IN SESSION ON MONDAY, February 17th, FOR A HALF DAY. SCHOOL SCHEDULES WILL BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE (http://www.woboe.org)."
Monday is President's Day and schools are normally closed. Some parents were unhappy about the change and wanted more information from the district as to why the decision was made. Interim Superintendent James O'Neill responded with this statement provided to the Alternative Press:
"I appreciate parents' concern but the number of snow days we have had and the projection for more snow days, including this Thursday, make it incumbent on us to make up lost days as best we can as soon as we can because the April break may not have a sufficient number of days to make up for those lost."
O'Neill also said, "If parents keep their children home on Monday, we are not taking action unless it part of a record of excessive absence."
The Alternative Press will provide any information about impending school closures due to snow as they become available.
