WEST ORANGE, NJ - The West Orange Mountaineers defeated the Bayonne Bees by a score of 54-12 on Feb. 7. Prior to the start of the match, the team's seniors were honored in an opening ceremony. “It was a great night,” said head coach Stephan Zichella. “It was emotional for the seniors and the coaches.”
West Orange dominated Bayonne, winning 11 of the 14 bouts that evening, five by pin, coming from senior Kevin Guardado, junior Sam Zheng, senior Jordan Velez, senior Daniel Okechukwu, and junior Chris Morgan. “We wrestled very well,” added Zichella. The effort was lead by the seniors, as all the teams seniors wrestled that evening. “The underclassman wanted to make it special for the seniors and really stepped up.”
The victory improved the Mountaineer's record to and impressive 12-2. “We've been wrestling really solid and we're peaking at the right time,” added Zichella. “It was the perfect evening.”
West Orange hopes to continue their top-notch wrestling at Clifton on Monday in the first round of the North 1, Group 4 NJSIAA Team Tournament. The sixth seeded Mountaineers will take on the third seeded Mustangs.
