WEST ORANGE, NJ - On Sunday, June 8, the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh - Essex will host the 14th Annual Exhibition of Irish Sports at Seton Hall Preparatory School’s Kelly Athletic Center, located at 700 Prospect Avenue in West Orange, NJ. The event will be held from 12:00 - 7:00 pm.
The non-profit event highlights Irish culture and traditions in sports while encouraging the community to keep the rich history of the Irish alive and celebrated.
Hurling, the national game of Ireland, is similar to field hockey but played with a shorter stick featuring a broader, oval-shaped blade. The game dates back 3,000 years in Celtic history. Hurling matches with teams from Ulster, NY, Hoboken, NJ, Rockland, NY, and Allentown, PA, will be played, along with a Rugby match featuring Montclair against Bayonne.
In addition to the sporting events, there will be music, food, and children's activities. Hundreds of spectators are expected to attend the event. The entrance fee is $20 and includes food, drink and entertainment.
The Shillelagh Club, located at 648 Prospect Avenue in West Orange. The Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh is an Irish- American social and charitable organization dedicated to the purpose of promoting and enhancing the fraternity and good fellowship of its membership. The organization is non-sectarian and non-political. The FSOS has three chapters in New Jersey in Old Bridge, Belmar and Essex/West Orange. FSOS Essex has hosted several events benefiting many charities including Save our Shore, The Blood Center of New Jersey donation drive and St. Baldricks.
