WESTFIELD, NJ — When the Westfield High School Boys’ Varsity Baseball team won the Union County Tournament against Governor Livingston 4-3 Sunday, senior pitcher and TAP Athlete of the Week Brad DeMartino led the way, pitching a complete game.
DeMartino scattered six hits and struck out eight while giving up three earned runs as he outdueled Highlanders' ace, Ethan Frohman, who was tagged with his first loss of the season.
“It felt amazing being on the mound for the last play of the game and really feeling like I was a big part in helping my team capture the title,” said DeMartino.
According to DeMartino, he started playing as early as preschool and he continues to love the sport; while the game can be calm at times, it can also have moments of great intensity, which is why he continues to play the game. DeMartino added that he will continue to play the sport he loves at Gettysburg College next year.
“What we like about him is the art of his pitching. Understanding that you don’t have to strike out a guy on three pitches,” said Coach Bob Brewster. “He’s always setting people up.”
According to Brewster, DeMartino’s “desire to take over the role as a team leader” separates him from other players.
“Brad has really taken the bull by the horns to be a leader,” said Brewster. “I can’t say enough good things about him.”
According to DeMartino, the team looks to continue its hard work and dedication to achieve both the state sectional championship and the state championship for group four.
“We feel that we are a strong contender as long as we keep working hard," he said.
